Typography 1. November 1936, 9 x 11", 46 pages. London. The first issue of Typography, edited by Robert Harling, with articles by Francis Meynell, Rene Hague, Ellic Howe, James Shand, others. With tip-ins including a showing of the typeface "Kayo" by Eric Gill, and an ad for Hague & Gill Ltd, printers as a part of the article by Rene Hague, "Reason and Typography" which includes the printer ad and sheets from books by Gill. Specimens of typefaces include "Penflow" and "Pentape" by Walter Schnifering, from the Schriftguss Typefoundry, Dresden. Every issue of this magazine included showings of new typefaces along with commentary. A variety of papers was used in the printing, and much is printed in color. The magazines were all spiral bound. Fine printing and design. Fine, front cover is torn away from the plastic spiral binding, otherwise a wonderful copy. (8 issues published in all.) see images

Typography 2. Spring 1937, 9 x 11", 48 pages. London. The second issue of this wonderful English typography magazine, with tip-ins throughout including art exhibition invitations designed by Ashley Havinden, Maurice Bennett and Frederick Horn. Also laid in is a pamphlet, sewn in wrappers, 8vo., with an extract of an essay by William Hazlitt "The Fight" set in Electra, the typeface designed by W. A. Dwiggins., mint copy. With 3 illustrations by Bernard Griffin. Also laid in is a printed note from the publisher stating the first issue is out of print. Includes articles by John Betjeman, Ellic Howe, John Rayner, others. Type specimens and reviews of them in this issue include Allegro, Cartoon Bold, and Thorne Shaded. Very fine. see image

Johnson on seventeenth century English types, type specimen reviews and showings of Ludlow Coronet Script, Dorchester Script, Grosvenor Script, Elizabeth from Bauer, Floride by Imre Reiner. Typography 7. Winter 1938, 9 x 11", 60 pages, London. With articles by John Carter, Roland Knaster, Denis Megaw on "Twenthieth-Century Sans Serifs", with showings of Gill Sans, Johnston Sans, Berthold Sans, Elegant Light, etc., a very good piece on the history of sans serif types, type specimens and reviews of Post-Roman from Berthold, Playbill from Stephenson Blake, Matura from Monotype, an interesting script from Bauer Lilith, others. The spiral binding is missing, so all of the sheets are loose, neverthless a fine copy. see image

Alphabet and Image: 1. Spring 1946, 8 x 9 1/2", 86 pages. London. The first issue of Alphabet and Image, edited by Robert Harling, published by James Shand at the Shenval Press. After the war this magazine took up some of the same subjects and themes as its predecessor, Typography and some of the same authors wrote for it, including Stanley Morison, Ruari McLean. There are also type specimen reviews and specimens shown, in this issue a type face from Stephenson, Blake, Bologna, a somewhat calligraphic, hand-drawn look here. There is an article on the illustrations of Mervyn Peake, 2 in color, by Frances Sarzano. An article on Kate Greenaway by Percy Muir includes color illustrations of some of her best known work. The piece by Ruari McLean is on the Egyptians, the family of type faces which evolved into faces like Memphis, Scarab, Cairo, Rockwell, et al. Spiral bound, very fine. see image

Also included is a lengthy article by Peggy Lang on Times Roman, with a fold-out specimen sheet. Another article appears on "News Bills: A Retrospectus" by S. L. Righyni, with color illustrations, a history of the form dating from 1865 to the late '30s, including showing the use of wood type, spiral bound, very fine. see image

Alphabet and Image: 4. April 1947, 8 x 9 1/2", 98 pages, London. With articles by Ellic Howe, James Thorpe, Graham Reynolds, Harold Keeble, Maurice de Sausmarez. The article by Keeble, "The Typography of Psychological Warfare" is particularly interesting, with reproductions of newspapers and leaflets from various countries including Germany, and France. Another article appears on the "Beggarstaff Brothers" by James Thorpe, the name an invented one. Poster designer, they were very popular in their time, illustrations in color.
